Money and greed. Many politicians and government officials are backed by alcohol, drug and tobacco companies and would risk financial and political ruin if they were to speak up about it and say not to buy it. Another reason is these companies make a lot of money and it would cause even more economic problems. You could also consider if they prohibited cigarettes you could have the same problems or worse then those that happened in the 1920's with the ban of alcohol during prohibition times.

prohibiting the sales of cigarettes is not in their best interest.money makes the gov't happy:) i don't think the gov't is worried about the death statistics.they're just pretending to care because that's what some money grubbing americans are good at lol and that is what corporate america is all about, ruthless behavior to get what we want. i don't necessarily support it.i think some people aren't worried unless the issues directly affect them in one way or another.most of the people i see petitioning for change in the cigarette/alcohol industry is because they've lost a loved one from lung cancer or drunk driving.otherwise,i don't think they'd care or give it a second thought.it's like some of the people you see protesting against the war.it's mainly the families, who lost their loved one that are angry.otherwise, back to normal selfish living, whatever 'normal' means.

Are you kidding? Do you have any idea how much money the government makes off cigarettes and alcohol? They have a thing called the "sin tax", which means that taxes on alcohol and tobacco products are higher than on other products, plus they fine the heck out of those companies, and they make billions of dollars off those companies. The government is trying to balance money with public safety, with individual rights. It's a tough balancing act, but they're actually doing pretty well when all's considered, and not to mention that all the money they make from cigs, and alcohol keep your taxes low.

Cars are next. CARS are the #1 producer of cancersous second hand smoke and it's in all your homes, all your offices, it's in your baby's room, you grama's room, you can't escape SMOG even in Alaska!
After cigarettes are gone and people keep getting emphysema and lung cancer, they will look for another reason and it will be the CAR, especially since the oil runs out in 150 years.
YOu think car smoke is cool, pipe it in to your home!
What ever ILLS or PUNISHMENTS or TAXES you all think should apply to cigarettes, they SHALL ALSO APPLY TO YOUR CARS in 20 years or less!
I warranty that!
I warranty you will see signs in California. This Restaraunt contains cancerous elements caused by seconddary smoke from cars parking in our lots and moving down the street.
I' m not saying cigarettes aren't bad -- they are, but the major cause of SECOND HAND SMOKE. That is the biggest lie every put upon people. CARS are and every scientists knows it!
Anyone here think CAR SMOKE IS COOL, it SMELLS GOOD, like it so much you put your little baby near the exhaust so they can get a good whiff!
So all of you smug non-smokers who get into your Honda Civic remember that and remember that one day rotton tomatos will be thrown at you!
And by the way, anyone figured out yet what happens when all the $2 a pack tax vanishes. Who's going to pick up the $30,000,000 a day in lost U.S. taxes just in the U.S. alone from 15,000,000 smokers. That's $30 Million per day minimum in taxes gone when cigarets are gone. Who'll fund Cancer reaserach then? What will happen when their funding gets slashed? Will Income Tax have to go up to fill the void? Property tax? Sales tax? How many taxes quietly go away? Hmmm? Goverment make a tax vanish? We'll just have to spead it around everyone. Let's make EVERYONE pick up the missing tax tab, which would be about $150 a year a new taxes for non-smokers. Each.
Guess who!

Then where would the tobacco settlement money come from? States have already spent (squandered) that money.
