I saw a guitarist having 7th string on his guitar. Just wondering how he tunes it relative to the sixth string. Steve Vai uses those 7th string for very high licks so there should be a way to tune it in realation to the other strings. Thanks.

the 7th string (being the largest) is tuned to B, and so from largest to smallest string it would read-- B E A D G B E. The 7-string guitar became popular as artists no longer had to tune the entire guitar down to B E A D G B, which is a popular tuning in metal these days.

seven string guitars are tuned the same as a six string only the seventh string is a low B. you can tune it any way you want to though and steve vai no doubt uses crazy tunings

The extra string is actually lower. It's the top one and it's tuned down from the low C to a low B. It's really only good for playing power chords.

I believe the 7th is an A, an octave lower than the 5th string A. But I could be wrong.
