Does anyone have any handy hints on sewing 'tricky' fabrics such as silk and satin which tend to slide around when you are sewing them? Any hints on this and what cotton is best to use would be greatly appreciated

I am assuming you mean sewing these fabrics on a machine. Pin, pin, pin, and pin some more. Sew slowly so that you have control of the fabric. Also if you machine has one of those side tables that give you a larger sewing platform that helps to keep the fabric from pulling downward and slipping. If your machine doesn't have this item try enlarging your sewing area with books or blocks of wood (cover so it does not pull your fabice.

Good luck. Best cotton is the 100% cotton by Kona. This is a lovely fabric to work.

you can use sulky sticky self adhesive tear-away fabric stabilizer. I use that on my sewing projects when the material is so slippery and unstable. there is a water soluble one as well - and others to choose from. the link below will show you the products.
what type of cotton is best to use depends upon the project or item of clothing. talk to the clerk at the fabric store, as they are usually experts in this field.
best wishes!

I don't know anything about sewing, but it would make sense to put silk or sliding material on top of a raspy or gripping material that would stick in its place every bit of the silk so you can sew effortlessly.

sew with tracing paper, then rip off the paper, if you cannot control it, or use tape, then remove the tape
