The ]screens on my internet are only in the middle leaving about 5 inches of blank space on either side.

it is due to the resolution that you are using ....
Right click on your desktop ....click on properties....click on settings.....change the "screen resolution" to 800 X 600....click apply and ok.....you will get wider screen with no gaps at the sides....if you want the old type back then change it back to 1024 X 768

Well this never happened to me.. Try to maximize and restore your screen several times or you can press F11 on the key board so the Internet explorer browser window be in the full screen mode and to return it back just press on the same key again..
