A pun (also known as paronomasia) is a figure of speech which consists of a deliberate confusion of similar words or phrases for rhetorical effect, whether humorous or serious. A pun can rely on the assumed equivalency of multiple similar words (homonymy), of different shades of meaning of one word (polysemy), or of a literal meaning with a metaphor. Bad puns are sometimes called "cheesy".
Here is an example of a pun. They are often used as a simple joke.
Q: What instrument do fish like to play? A: A bass guitar." (Pun on the identical spelling of /beıs/ (low frequency), and /bæs/ (a kind of fish)).
Sometimes in conversation a phrase will slip out that strikes the speaker as a pun...therefore they say no pun intended so that the listener will know that the pun was either unintentional or that they realize it was not that funny...or sometimes even to point out the humor in what was said...whether or not it was intentional.

A pun is like... Baseball on a foggy day is all about hit and mist. It can have two meanings. If people say "no pun intended" , they mean the non-funny one. At what the actual words mean, not the "funny" or "haha" version of the sentence.

NO PUN INTENDED.... literally, it means saying something that may offend someone, anyone or everyone without being intended... a quick excuse of saying "I'm sorry" and that "What I might mention would hurt anyone but I never intended it that way".... most people specially those emotional ones are easily offended but the speaker never meant it for him.....

Like when someone accidentaly makes a joke, but they didn't mean it. It seems a tad funny, but at the time it's either unwanted or inappropriote, so someone will say "No pun intended."

it means that what the person said included a pun (wordplay) but that it was unintentional and not the point of the word choice.
