There was a story just yesterday about a guy who was 87 playing in a minor league game..

Nolan Ryan - Born 1947 was 46 his last year 1993

Julio Franco - Born 8-23-58 will be 48 next month

Phil Niekro - Born 1939 pitched until he was 48

Nolan Ryan throwing 95 at 46 might be a little more impressive that Phil Niekro floating a knuckleball up there at 65 but it must have worked for Phil he won 319 games and is in the HOF...

Those are the oldest 3 MLB players who actually played/play on a pretty much regular basis that I can recall.

I don't think sending Minoso to the plate once a decade to strike out or having Satchel Page pitch "one inning" can really be considered "playing" .That is a damn stunt! . As I recall Satchel Page set the side down in order."Seems like I went to that game".Charley Finley(A's owner) would do anything to sell tickets, including having a Mule at games "Charley O" the mule..

As noted, Satchel Paige was the oldest player in the major leagues.

The oldest professional player was probably Minnie Minoso, who played in one game for the independent St. Paul Saints in 2003 at the age of 80. (He was one plate appearance and was walked.)

Edit: And Minoso's record has been broken twice in the last month. The current holder would be Buck O'Neill, who played in the Northern League All-Star game on 7/18, at the age of 94.

James Henry O'Rourke (September 1, 1850 - January 8, 1919), nicknamed "Orator Jim", was an American professional baseball player in the National Association and Major League Baseball who played primarily as a left fielder. In the era before the establishment of the pitching mound in 1893, he ranked behind only Cap Anson in career games played (1644), hits (2146), at-bats (6884), doubles (392) and total bases (2936), and behind only Harry Stovey in runs scored (1370).

He was born in East Bridgeport, Connecticut. On April 22, 1876, he made the first base hit in major league history. After leaving the major leagues following the 1893 season, he continued to play in the minor leagues until he was over 50 years old; in 1904 he made a final appearance with the New York Giants under manager and friend John McGraw, becoming at age 54 the oldest player ever to appear in the National League and the oldest player to ever hit safely in a major league game. He returned to the minors as president of the Connecticut League, and in 1912 returned to the field to catch a complete minor league game at the age of 60

The above got it correct with Satchel Paige

Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige pitched for the Kansas City A's (American League) at the age of 59 years and 80 days on September 25, 1965.

It's hard to believe, but utility infielder Champ Summers stuck around until he was about 38, playing a key role on the 1984 Padres NL Championship team.
