plz settle a bet. i say warning labels r just ways for companies to cover their legal bases against future client stupidity, and don't neccessarily mean someone has actually *tried* to do what is warned against. my wife says it means some dummy has tried it, and they're warning bc of the attempt. who is right?

Either that or because someone CLAIMED to have done it in a stupid lawsuit. People will do anything for money.

Both actually. In some cases the manufacturer sees the potential before it happens in other cases someone has infact tried to use the product unother than the way it was intended. In a store I once worked at we had to take the ponytail scrunchies off the shelf after a rash of ignorant moms putting the things on their babies heads as head bands and the things had slipped and strangled a few babies.

There is a story of a man who was working in his bathroom. he used a Black and Decker drill as a hammer. The nail broke thgrough the plastic housing and the man was electrocuted (but not killed).

The man sued for shoddy workmanship and won, despite the fact that he was using the drill improperly.

That is why it has to be spelled out that if you use the item in a manner for which it is not designed (a drill as a hammer) the warrentee is void and the company is not held liable for any accidents that arise from the improper use of their products.

We have to protect the stupid. What ever happend to natural selection? The kid that swallows too many marbles doesn't grow up to have his own kids.

The labels are there to take all liability off of the company and place it on the consumer. That way if something does happen, they cant be held liable (or legally responsible) for the damage.

This also can be demanded by their insurance companies or company policy.

Usually they come from someone trying to sue for some rediculous thing. Some of the warnings are so rediculous they are comic. But some nut out there cause it to happen.

I think you are both right. There have been so many stupid lawsuits that now companies try to predict almost any stupid thing that someone could do.

Sign are put up because someone has actually done it, warning labels are there so if it happens they can't be sued "cause they warned you"

technically, youre both right, they put the labels on because someone has tried it, sued them for neglegence, and gotten away with a lot of their money and theyre trying to prevent it from happening again

Thank the lawyers. They have increased the costs for many things in our lives, all because of threats and lawsuits, frivolous and otherwise.
