It's not due to fungus infection, but due to the chasing and pecking of each other. I had separated them already after finding out the result.

Is it in with other fish? This is the most common cause. Their long, bright fins attract other fish and they just can't help nip them. If he's in with another betta, remove it right away.

Torn fins can also be an early sign of fin/tail rot or another disease. There are so many fungi, bacteria, etc. that attack fish that it's hard to just tell you. I'd recommend getting something like Melafix (i think that's what it's called. I work at a pet store but can't remember at the moment) it kind of smells like that Vick's rub stuff. It's a better general cure as most are too specific.

The best product on the market to aid in fin regeneration is Melafix. I can't guarantee that it will heal your bettas fins, though. Bettas are quite fragile and torn fins are problematic for them. Is your fish in a bowl/tank by itself? Torn fins on a betta are a sign of weakness and if your fish is not by itself its tankmates will begin to pick on it before too long.

My advice, try the Melafix, use a little extra Stress Coat and hope for the best.

Hi there - I had the best luck with Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Splendid Betta BettaFix Remedy Antibacterial medication made especially for bettas. Use whenever your betta exhibits signs of bacterial or fungal disease, such as red ulcers, frayed or torn fins, slimy patches, or cottony growths. Also helps heal open wounds and tissue damage.

It's great stuff.

Normally, torn fins and tails do heal naturally. Just make sure that the water id properly conditioned and is in perfect shape. Likewise, remove any aggresive fish around. You may need some medications like methylene blue if the torn fins and tails are due to fungus infections.

Just let the Betta alone in a tank for a few weeks. The fin would recovery again. Add salt or medicine in the tank would be better.

I agree with everyone on the Stress Coat and a little bit of salt to the tank. BUT if you don't have the money for it, then just give him time. His fins will grow back in a while, a couple months at the most. Just give him time, he'll be perfectly fine.

I use aquarium salt (1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water) which heals fish. I also add a dose of StressCoat, which contains aloe to also speed up recovery. The StressCoat also contains electrolytes to help keep the fish calm.

You will also need to do daily water changes if he is in a bowl to keep any other bacteria from infecting him. If he's in a tank, just make sure your water parameters are ok (ammonia and nitrites at 0ppm, nitrates at less than 20ppm, and pH at around 7.0).

Good luck!

Fin rot is caused by dirty water, it makes the finls look shredded and black at the tips. Looking at your situation, that is most likely what happened to your fish. Don't worry, very treatable. They have medicine for it at the pet store. There is no home remedy for fin rot that I know of. But there are lots of meds for it.

They have a product at pet co or petsmart called stress coat. It should help your fish's fins heal, if they aren't too badly injured.
