Reasons I can think of:
a) There are people who do acts of kindness randomly
b) There are people who want to do act of kindness but are too shy to do in a known circle
c) If it is a third person's view (like wife's view about husband giving gift to a strager) then its possible that person who is receiving the gift may not be stranger for one who is giving but is stanger to one who is seeing it
d) It could be indirectly influencing the person who might have some decision making authority (hit in the dark though)
e) some people might do out of their inpredictable nature
f) some people do this as act to punish themselves and repent for something bad they might have done. They believe thay by doing so, they will be forgiven.

Such a gift is often called charity, a bribe, or even a means for someone to atone for their concious.

1) as Charity, you have a surplus amount of any one thing and can afford to offer it to anyone, including a stranger...and in so doing, feel better about the plenty you have.

2) as a Bribe, you are giving something to someone, in hopes that you will be treated better in the future or get soemthing of more value (material or in deed) and thus are doing it to get ahead.

3) as Atonement, you are doing it because you have wronged someone before and feel like you need to make things better...and a stranger may have a better day because of your gift and thus you are removing some of your guilt for past actions by passing on some of it to another

One thing you will notice, no matter how good or bad the intention, a gift is only given when you somehow benefit from it...making yourself feel better, getting yourself ahead, or removing some sort of negative thing you have done through a good action.

♡Yes, I have! Here's a SMALL example, I ALWAYS carry an new, extra, mini, portable umbrella in my bag. The other day as I was walking to work, it starting raining suddenly. I saw a young mother with a baby standing under an awning to keep from getting wet. I took out the umbrella and gave it to her. No biggie, but her face just lit up and she was delighted. I was late for work so I just hurried along!(*^o^*) I did it because I thought it might help her out. ~Other things too, some small, some big. Since coming to Japan, total strangers have given me gifts too. 'What goes around, comes around.' (^_-)-☆ Very interesting!♡

If the gift wasn't something completely weird, said gift-giver might be making an attempt at begin daring, and taking a chance on something completely new. Trying to grab the recipient's attention.

I have and know I will again. It's usually something small but it's given usually to bring a smile to the face of someone who looks like they need it. Sometimes you can just tell when watching people who is having a bad day and even though you don't know someone who looks like that you know you can brighten their day with a simple small gesture that says "I care about you."

A smile can be a gift, you know? As long as it's not super personal like a watch or something.

But its not uncommon. It happens all the time. Spread the love.

Mostly silly answers aside, yes. I have and I would. You never know when you are going to need someones help. I would hope someones act of kindness would have inspired that help.
