Basically delete what you don't need, and use removeable media (CD/DVD) to place wanted data on your shelf for a later date. One trick that I learned is to delete language files that you don't speak. Within each application, there are sets of instructions that display the correct languages, so within any given app, you will have German, French, Spanish, Japaneese, English, etc. It takes some time, but it might be worth it. I have Final Cut Studio, and I ended up saving almost 2 GB by deleteing those files. They're have the extention .lproj and are found by control-clicking individual applications, viewing the contents, and then manual deleting all .lproj files other than english. I would recommend running a search within that finder window to show all lproj files and selecting the group before english, send them to the trash, and then selecting all the others after english and sending them to the trash.
