Nah, it would turn football into a huge kindergarten fight. All players would be running by the referee in tears, saying "he called me so and so, give him a red card!!!" just to get the opponents sent off. Plus, how could the referee know if they are telling the truth? Should players wear microphones?

There are even harsher consequences for offenses such as you've mentioned as addressed in Paragraph 4 of the Amendment to Article 55 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code that states in part...:
If any player, association or club official or spectator perpetrates any kind of discriminatory or contemptuous act as described by par. 1 and/or 2 of this article, three points will automatically be deducted from the team concerned, if identifiable, after the first offence. In the case of a second offence, six points will automatically be educted, and for a further offence, the team will be relegated. In the case of matches without points, the team concerned, if identifiable, will be disqualified.
Scary, huh! It doesn't just say discriminatory but adds contemptuously - the later not requiring the provocation necessarily being discriminatory or prejudicial. But it assumes FIFA would be willing to address the provocation (what was said by whom) as seriously as they seem to feel the need to address the response to the provocation. Moreover, for the record, there were a number of players (French and Italian) who did hear Zidane being repeatedly provoked by Materazzi.

Yes I think that should be done. But the issue will be on how to justify if someone insulted or violated the ethical roles.Take for example the Zizou case. It happened just between the two players without the refree being there. He took a decision only after the italian play was headed by Zizou. So how do we justify such an act of verbal insult.

Sure, but what if no one hear the player [*cough* Zidane] being insulted? & what if a player said another player was making unethical acts such as insults just to get a red card. What about proof?
But if that was the case for Zidane, then I understand why he did that. But why headbutt him? Bloody' punch him in the face!!!

They already have a card that is in place. Red card number 6. Uses offensive or insulting or abusive language or gestures. That is an insult. However now you just need it to be heard, which makes it the harder part. The players are not stupid, they won't do it out loud. Just so the victim can hear.

i think there should be 2 sorts of red card
1 red card = out of the game for 10 minutes -
this might prove to be severe enough penalty for a team wihtout a player.
2 red cards = out of this game and the other one . just like the current red card works.
this will make the game balances, and not much complaining from the playing sides.

what next? a red card for taking a dive? look things get said by players in every sport to others whether they are on the pitch, on a court , on the ice, or a football field, its always happened and always will. should all the players wear microphones? or maybe hire a lawyer that runs along side them to monitor the microphones and the conversations? Your sentiment is right but your idea is not very practical..............

all the above answers talk about what is wrong with this, how will the referee ever know when this happens. being a ref, i have given red cards for foul/abusive language, which if a ref ever hears something like this, he will most likely issue the red card under this rule.

Every player does it so there would be no player left on the field to play. Then the score would be 0-0....Wait a minute, most games are like that way already.

why not? but the problem is...THEY CAN'T HEAR IT... I mean how many times African and Asian players' been discriminated against? Many players are used to the insults that they ignore it. But, when it comes to Zidane, it's a different case. He is a superstar, and everyone respects him, and of course, most would know that if you insult Zidane, you'll get your *** kick.
