I am going to a baby shower and I need a gift. The parents do not know the gender so I need a gift that works for both girl and boy. What should I get?
P.S I do not want to buy clothes for the baby because I know that she will already get alot of clothes.

depends how much you want to spend...is she breastfeeding? if so, a boppy or nursing pillow. If not, bottles would be good. Swing, bouncee seat, pack n play, Baby Bjorn or other carrier/sling, DIAPERS!.

I bought a small laundry basket (one of those circular ones). And filled it with diapers & baby needs. If you're artistic, you can even try to make it look like a cake. As I am not artistic, I just put a plastic gift bag over it, and added a bow.

My nieces were very appreciative of these gifts, because they indeed did have so many clothes. Get some size newborns, and some size 1's.

Diapers go through so fast, and unisex clothes are actually very rarely worn. Most parents end up only putting their babies in pink or blue anyways.

If you're looking to spend less - there's tons and tons of newborn toys out there. Parents Magazine now makes wonderful toys. Einstein is getting really big now too.

You have some great suggestions here, pick and choose between all of them. I did the diaper cake as well, and you can pick up several small items that you just want to put on it. The baby gas drops are great (mylicon I think is how you spell it, but, you can go to Walmart and get a great generic brand that works just as well...)
Alot of it depends on how much you are willing to spend, what the mother already has, and as was asked in a previous post, is she going to breast feed or not... If you get a bottle... get a bottle brush as well, rattle, burp rag, diapers... If she is going to bottle feed, another good thing is I'm not sure of the name of it, but, I'm sure you'll find it in just about any baby section. It is a "tupperware" (not that brand) container that stacks, and you can fill each section with formula, so when mom goes out, she doesn't need to carry an entire can of formula.
Good luck in your purchases...

How about the "Baby Mozart" DVD and some Baby Einstein age-appropriate toys to make it a theme. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can add more Baby Einstein DVDs / toys. These can be found at Target or on-line. I ended up buying these myself, but would have loved to receive them at my shower. Most the gifts I received were clothes, blankets, and large items like bouncy chairs, diaper bags, etc.

I always bought diapers and burping rags! I never buy newborn diapers b/c newborns usually grow out of those pretty quick. But i will buy size 1 and 2 and some burping rags or something like that. Its best to buy something that you know that will get used all the time that the parents throw away. Hope this helps! Gift cards are nice too!

Diapers (Pampers Swaddlers are the best!!)
Baby towel set
White baby socks
Burp rags (cloth diapers)
Gift card to Target, Babies R Us, or where she registered
Blanket
Toys that clip to the car sat carrier
Diaper bag
Piggy bank
Photo album
Picture frame
Gift card to a portrait studio (Sears, JC Penney...)
If she uses a regular camera (not digital) film will be very useful

Remember to include a receipt with anything you give, it's hard to exchange at certain places (or certain items like diapers) without one...I found out the hard way!

I received what I am going to suggest and I am soooooo glad that I did. It saved me many trips to the store when I was just to sleep deprived to go.

Buy a small wicker basket, like a toddler size laundry basket, and fill it with things that the parents will use DAILY or on a regular basis ....for example, newborn or size 1 diapers, newborn baby wipes, diaper rash cream, baby bath, baby shampoo, lotion, maybe a teething ring or two, lap pads or the disposable Huggies changing pads, disposable washcloths, infant Tylenol drops, infant gas drops, (these really come in handy and no one really thinks about them), and maybe a rattle.

One of the most memorable gifts I received at my baby shower was a teddy bear who was wearing a 12 mos. size baby bathing suit, sandals and sunglasses. My daughter was able to wear the bathing suit and she still plays with the bear!

Another gift was a laundry basket filled with two big bottles of Dreft laundry detergent, and a few bottles of Dreft pre-treater. Those came in quite handy - that stuff is expensive, but works really well!

Diapers, wipes, Baby body wash and shampoo, Baby face cloths, receiving blankets. They will need a lot of these things. If you can get together with other people, fill a small laundry basket or toy box with baby supplies.

get a bath tub for the baby and then it fill it to the brim with bath towels, washrags, soaps, lotions, toys or anything else that may be helpful in the bath room . . . or, get a scrapbook for a baby and then get a little basket or tub and fill it with scissors, papers, stickers or anything that can be used to scrapbook her baby's first years . . . or get a little plastic drawer thing and fill it up with diapers, wipes, powder, diaper-rash ointment and whatever else that would help out with all of those diaper changes . . . my point here is, get a theme down. if you want to get stuff for feedings, or diapering or bathing or memories, concentrate on just that and get a lot of it. it shows that you put effort into in and it is still fairly easy and unique. that is what i do for all the showers i go to and it always seems to be a big hit!!

A case of diapers and a large jug of Dreft. This was the best present I received at my shower (from my sister). I prefer useful presents. Clothes are nice, but really...my son was large and non of the newborn stuff I received at my shower fit him. You'll always need diapers and laundry detergent though...and they're both pretty expensive.
