Actually having it on 24/7 is not that bad. The computer I am typing to you right now has been on for about 3 months straight. Even during power outages (battery backup and generator). And its.. about 3 months old. The one it replaced was 8 years old.. it ran pretty much for 8 straight years unless I was adding a bigger HD or memory to it... only off when I was on vacation and out of town. I also have three other systems in my home network, they are all on right now and have been on for months.

1 Have a surge surpressor, and or battery backup unit
2 Don't test everything you download on your main computer
3 Keep the room cool so the puter doesn't overheat
4 Ground static conducting things
5 No magnets near the computer
6 No liquid near the computer

Scan and keep updated, some good virus software. But the best virus protection your computer can have is YOUR BRAIN. Think about where your getting stuff, before you click on that exe

Everyone can run their computers 24x7 even 365days without a break. But it really might break down eventually. Some considerations to take note if you really want to do that:

1. Get a server. Server has more durable hardware and stable configurations.
2. Get a power conditioner. Power conditioner stables the electrical current and surges.
3. Monitor the room temperature. Constant cool temperature will prevent heat and disperse any built up of heat inside the computer.

As for the other necessity such as Uninterrupted Power Supply, Backup drives, Offline sites, those you may or may not want to implement as part of your duster recover plan.

In the case you have not got a server and would like to overrun your computer. The single best advice I can give you is to have a constant cool air temperature running 24x7 parallel to your computer.

I hope I am not sounding too technical.

OK Just make sure you have the computer in a room which is cool, I have known so many people who have their computers on 24/7. Downloading software all the time and uninstalling it may give you problems.

There are computer utility programs you can buy, such as System Suite 6, that can be scheduled to run sweeps of your computer for problems unattended. Since you install lots of different software, your registry will have to be checked for problems. There are other programs you can buy that do similar things. There is a free program called Advanced Window Care ( http://iobit.com/ ) that will handle problems, though it has no scheduler. In Windows there is a scheduler you can run to do defrags when you usually aren't using it, like at two in the morning.

Well... eventually something will stop it if you use a lot of software. Just the way it works, no software is 100% reliable. Really, not much you can do but be proactive: virus scanner, firewall, anti-spyware, keep up with patches, etc.

you need good case fans (double ball bearing) and alot of them, you need a good CPU cooler other than keeping it cool and dust free it should not be a problem I run mine 24/7 for years no trouble
