Also, a non-skilled individual who hangs out with volunteer firefighters and "helps" them. Back in the days when the bells were manual, "dingers" were usually in charge of ringing the bells, hence the name.

A dinger may or may not be an official (or honorary) member of the department. He/she may or may not be mentally handicapped.
