Or does it just keep tanning and get darker?

That's a good question , i was thinking of that the other day ..
When i was a little girl i would get such an amazing tan
But now i can stay out in the sun the whole day and not even get red..
I'm going to Dominican next week and I'm hoping that i tan ....

Your tans starts to fade when you don't tan for a while. Also around the end of summer, it will slowly ware off. You have to reapply each summer. It might also get a little darker each year depending on how much tan you get the previous year and if it doesn't all go away.

Depends on your race. Caucasians will burn at certain point instead of tanning further. Darker races will probably keep tanning.

When the flesh is charred and smoking, the tanning is over.
