Partitioning is never useless. It's completely impossible to even use a hard drive, without partitioning it. Now, whether or not you should put more than one partition on each hard drive is a different story. I personally do, on very large drives. It just makes more sense, especially for the drive that has the C:\ partition on it. If/when you need to reload Windows, you can just reformat the C:\ partition, and leave all of your other data completely untouched, which is nice.

Now, there's a very good chance you won't be able to boot from your Firewire drive. If you have a pre-built computer, there's almost a 100% chance you won't be able to boot from anything except an IDE or SATA drive. Why are you wanting to boot from your Firewire drive, anyway? Has your IDE drive failed? If so, faster, larger IDE drives are CHEAP these days. Like a Seagate 200GB 7,200 rpm drive for well under $100, and 500GB drives for less than $200.

alchemist_n_tx It's completely impossible to even use a hard drive, without partitioning it. You r wrong in saying that. One can use 120GB hard-drive without using partitioning.

But it is good Idea to partition the Drive. Reason for this is:

1 It will be lot faster to boot up
2 It will be lot faster to find and retrieve the software
3 Your Drive will be lot fater
