I've found that drinking tea helps to dry it out and dull the pain. An added bonus is when you're done with the teabag, squish out all the water and put it right on the canker sore- it should dry it out and make it less painful for a while.

For some not-so-natural remedies, try Zilactin- it hurts like hell when it first goes on, but it numbs the canker sore as well as coats it to stop it from getting irritated.

Ditto on the salt water .....

If he gets sores in his mouth often, try switching toothpaste. I used to get them so bad even water was impossible to drink ... and eating was basically out of the question. After years and doctor after doctor -- I did some research online and found that there is an ingredient in toothpaste called sodium laurel sulfate that can cause mouth ulcers. I switched to a natural toothpaste called "Tom's of Maine" -- I can buy it at my local Walmart and I haven't had a single mouth sore since.

Good luck .....

I don't know about home remedies, but you can get various products easily from a pharmacy. I know of "Orabase," which is like all of said products. They kill the pain in the immediate area and last for a fairly long time.

My mom always made us wash out our mouths with a kid's allergy medicine. It doesn't sting at all and it heals it up within 3 days. Yes the taste is gross but it really does work and it's something you probably have around the house as opposed to going out and buying it.

Gargle warm salt water three times a day or as needed. Don't eat or drink any acetic things, like orange juice, ketchup or salt. It should be gone in a few days.
