No, it will never happen. We are at a point in history that no nation/empire can have the type of impact the Roman Empire did. Not even the US and British Empire at their peaks could rival the Roman Empire.

No, no modern day country would be able to match the Roman Empire. The Romans had a technological and organizational edge over the countries that bordered it. For a short time the Mongols managed it, until their organization collapsed. Since then, no one has proven to be a world conqueror.

I believe that only China could achieve that in the coming centuries, but the next great empire will be a world-wide empire, probably cosmopolitan with a powerful Chinese presence in the mix.

Effectively, the Chinese culture is the only civilization of antiquity that is alive and vigorous in the present world. Theoretically, a growingly interwoven European Community could become something of a reflowering of classical Roman-Hellenic culture, but there has been a great "interregnum" of dark ages, which is a discontinuity; that world largely perished.

Honestly, I see a lot of parallels between the Roman Republic and the United States in terms of their mutual history. If we ever get to the point where we abandon citizen armies in favour of armies loyal to a particular general or faction within the government, I would begin to worry.
