I'll be travelling there nest April with my wife and two small children, 6 and 1 years old. I like the beach but don't want to spend all my time there. I'm interested in cool tings to do that won't take us too far away from where we'll be based. The question is where...?

Lucky you! You're going to get to see one of the most beautiful places out there! I remember going to Hawaii as a kid because of my father's job, and I'll never forget it.
My suggestion would be to visit Honolulu, Oahu first. You can visit some of the historical and governmental landscapes the island has to offer.
Also, I remember a company called Atlantis out there that did underwater submarine guides for tourists. Among the attractions there you can visit the local rainforest, go to a few loau's, check out some of the volcanic rock (you can even go in a helicoptor ride to get to some of the volcanoes) , go fishing and go whale watching.

definetley Kauai, its serene green and splendid nature is brethtakind and meditative . it is what you look for on a get away vaccation to an island . its trails for hikers and bikers alike make it a perfect romantic spot for the ones in love or in the process.
