Ethanol can be made as a byproduct of fermentation - anything that has sugars or starches can be fermented by yeast and made into an ethanol-containing substance. This is how most alcoholic beverages came to be. There are other ways that are not economically feasible on the small scale, but companies like Sigma-Aldrich produce ethanol for research labs.

fermenting the glucose in most fruits and vegtables will give you ethanol, or drinking alcohol.
