Petrol, diesel , kerosene etc are the fractions of crude oil . Crude oil or petrolium is seperated into different fractions using fractional distillation process. During this process, the different components distill over at different temperatures .These fractions are separated and collected at different levels of the fractionating column.

the cook it like a distillary for alcohol and holding it at differant tempatures is when they separate out the differant volitile chemicals and so the more unstable liquids and so on come out first til the tar is last and used for asphalt and roof coatings and such
