This is NOT a religious question, so PLEASE no religious answers.

I just lost a friend last week. Her doctor told her that she had three months to live in April. She suffered before she died.

If my doctor tells me that I am going to die and that I might suffer before I go. Why can't I ask him/her at some point to prescribe me something that will let me fall asleep and not wake up. We get to live free in this country. Why can't we be allowed the freedom to die on our own terms?

I agree with your point, I have stated clearly in my will, that if I am not able to make decisions due to illness I do not want to suffer or make my family suffer. I guess the closest thing you can due is to put your wishes in writing.

This is a really powerful question, what if it was a mistake, or what if they found a cure in those three month? What about spending the rest of your time on earth with people who care about you and saying your good byes. Its a sad situation and Im sorry for your loss but I dont think that is the answer.

Life and death are very religious matters, regardless of what religion you follow. I'm sure you'll agree when you're on your death bed. I can't imagine what your religious convictions will be at the time, but you'll definately think about the meaning of it all, etc.,.

I guess my point is that you can't separate the two issues, so you won't get any good answers.

Assisted suicide.

This is a very hard topic to discuss.

There are laws and rules in several states that do allow it under certain conditions, like if the person is in horrible pain. There are several books on the topic, might I reccomend going to the library?

Sorry to hear about your friend.

Well you see you can do that if you want.
Why would you want to make a law that gives people permission to do it. I know you're going to say it's your choice, But things come up and you may not be-able to.
If you make it a law ....where does it stop...and who gets to decide the fate of the person who suffers.
There are going to be a hundred other question that you and I didn't even think of yet.
So if you want do it, then do it. But don't make them give you a choice to do it.

Interesting question I enjoyed it.

I wouldn't want to suffer greatly before I die either.

What if someone makes a rash decision and doesn't think it through? What if the doctor is a quack and mis-diagnoses the patient?
