"grow up" as written by many answerers is apt in your case!
ZZ lost his head, pun intended, at that moment and did that stupid headbutt. Now why would you?
Remember the adages, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words don't hurt me" and "an eye for an eye"?
So why must one's words be followed by a physical reaction? If Materazzi said something, then ZZ should reply by words, and not by headbutting!
So grow up and smell the flowers, we have more than enough violence in this world, we don't need another one.

Excuse me but I support a 1000000% ZIZOU. Ohhh come on all the people that are saying "ohh grow up" and "be the better person" just don´t have a clue what you're saying. No one can understand those situations because you're not professional players or anything remotely close to that. And besides the adrenaline that they all have is outrageous. HE IS THE BEST PLAYER OF THE CUP. And i really don't think that a bunch of people here know more than 2000 and something journalists that gave him they're vote to be the best player of the cup. So to conclude shut the F...K UP.

Sparkles, yeah I hear you. Zidane is still a great sportsman despite his altercation. It was not the best course of action for him to have responded in violence, but given the circumstances surrounding the incident his behavior is understandable (and quite justifiable).
All the naysayers need to grow up themselves, and learn a little humility and empathy towards Zidane as well. Failure to be objective and open-minded in a situation is to be ignorant.

Sorry, you only have Zinedine Zidane's word that his family was insulted. Maarco Materazzi admits words were exchanged, but absolutely denies insulting his family.
Believe who you wish. You will never know for sure.

When Tyson took a bite out of Hollyfield's ears, it was a direct result of the referee letting Hollyfield keep punching Tyson below the belt. One can take only so much, before he looses his temper and acts... I'm not saying that Zidane acted appropriately, but he acted like a man.

I would do the same thing as Zidane. But I would not be able to get where Zidane got, with driving his team to WC final. I just hope to God that I will never get provoked like that..

how do you know? there's a million lip readers who read a million things from the same lips. Did you randomly choose the family speculation because it sounded like the best grounds for a headbutt?? why not the terrorist scenario or perhaps sleeping with his wife or even his sister? There's plenty to choose from. A headbutt is a pretty low note to end your career on. I don't think there's any excuse that justifies it in my books.

hero, more like total hot-head loser. if he had any balls at all he would have head-butted him in the face and broken his nose. Do you think the "vicious" head-butt hurt, or do you think mazzawhatever faked like it did. zidane showed how weak muslims are, they can't take an insult. or his mom really is a terrorist whore.

All you posters who said "grow up" need to grow up yourselves.
If you are going to respond in a rude manner to someone's question, then you shouldn't reply at all. Violence isn't a good thing and neither is insulting one another a good thing. End of discussion.
