I've been using "avast! 4" for about a year, and like it very much. It is free for non-commercial home use, and provides automatic free updates, which works well. It scans and certifies e-mail. It does not allow you to run automatic scans, however.

Before that I used AVG antivirus, and probably still would, except you're allowed only one copy of the free version. I still use it on my older (Windows 98SE) computer. It worked well.

Both seem to do a good job of catching viruses -- both found viruses on my computer and alerted me in time (as far as I could tell; I've had no serious computer problems). Both seem to do well according to testing organizations mentioned in the PC World article, below.

There are also free online scanners, but I find them to be too slow to be worth the time, compared to software on my machine. That's especially true for doing weekly (or more frequent) scans. If that's what you want, though, check out the links below.
