This isn't directed to all but many who insist that it was okay for Zidane to react violently to Materazzi's comment which was allegedly but not definitely race related among other speculations. If you can justify the headbutt in the name of a racial insult and then turn around and in the same sentence call italians scum among other things. Everyone needs to grow up and stop being hypocrits. Maybe it wasn't nice of Materazzi to insult him in whatever way but if everyone reacted the way zidane did every time their feelings got hurt, this world would be ridiculous. Materazzi didn't end Zidane's career with a red card... he did it on his own because he acted out of impulse. It has nothing to do with the french vs the italians... i for one had the most respect for zidane until i saw his reaction on sunday and i'm sure many will agree that instead of trying to shift the blame, just as the rest of us, zidane should be responsible for his own actions.

just for the record. for the person who said that he did take responsibility when he said sorry... he said he didn't regret the headbutt on materazzi, he was sorry his fans had to see it. That's not taking responsibility.

Its good to know that stupidy is seen as heroic for some people... if he's your hero there's obviously no point in trying to teach you something because you're not far from the Zidane mentality. hahaha.. not a good place to be. As for the golden ball... can anyone say that Cannavaro is the righful winner?? i would say so.

Dear Christina, I totally agree with you.
Zidane didn't say Materazzi's insult was race related. So, what's all the fuss about?
If Fifa is going to investigate further, and they happen to find out that it actually was a racial slur to Zidane's mother or sister, I'm sure Materazzi will get punished for it. But most probably, he didn't say anything racial -- just that dumb "your mother/sister is a b****" talk which is so usual on the pich. If so, Zidane shouldn't have taken it so personally, even if his mother is seriously sick.
And I agree with you on Cannavaro. If I remember well, he didn't get one yellow card in the whole tournament, and he was amazing on the field. He truly deserved the Golden Ball for best player and example of fair play.

What tells you that Zidane is not taking responsibility for what he did? He was sent out with red card, and this is something that I REALLY believe got Italy the victory. I am not saying that Italy is not excellent team. Zizu made a statement, a fair one, he could go around and hide behind some racial ****, but he was up front on situation. By doing this, he removed the veil of racism that everybody started to blame Italy and fans, especially here on net. Not to mentioned that Italy could got into problems for that as a team and maybe got replay on WC end. I stand beside Zidane 100% whether you like it or not, it is not a small thing to offend one's family under pressure like playing final game, and have parent hospitalized. Initiator was Materazzi, and responsibility SHOULD be shifted to him as well.

It is unbelievable how people still try to justify Zidane's action!
What about the Italians being called "mafia" by the German and French press? Should Italy react officially against those countries? Or maybe they should do like they have done: ignore who provoked them!
I think the bitterness and the anger of few (hopefully just few) French supporters... makes the ITALIAN triumph a lot sweeter!
"marifa5970": I have asked exactly the same question, and no one seems to have answers for that!

In the first place, Materazi should have been more civilized. People like him and Bush are the ones who started WAR in this world. If we can educate these type of people in constant RESPECT for other human beings and the sovereignty of another belief and culture and country, we will have a PEACEFUL WORLD!
Zidane reacted as any human being would, because that is who he is... a normal human being who demand RESPECT. There is also a hidden message that people failed to recognized. For a person with extreme unconscious competency with his usage of feet, I am surprised that he did not use his boots. That is what Materazi trully deserves.. but why was he using his head instead?

Very well said.
It was probably not a race related insult, since both are of the same race. Materazzi probably talked about Zidane's Mama!!!
Now the question is: Did Materazzi say it in Italian, French or English???

Materazzi insulted Zinedine Zidane's family and Zinedine Zidane had just found out that his mother has a severe sickness. He is my hero. Materazzi should be punished. He was the one who provoked Zinedine Zidane. I do agree that it may hav been the wrong thing to do though. Materazzi deserved it though. I totally agree with Zidane. I believe he shouldn't regret it he said sorry the right way! I stand by Zidane. MY HERO. And he probably said it in italian. Zidane knows how to speak italian. He deserves the golden ball!

i totally agree with you! i'm still a zizou fan though, he was an excellent football player!
anyway, ppls are making a fuzz out of this chaotic situation, the interesting thing though is:
- 2 years ago totti was banned from UEFO EC 2004 for spitting at poulsen, noone argued about totti being insulted then...and zidane's headbutt is awarded with the golden ball for being the best player in WC 2006...
- also blatter and platini were not present at the ceremony...
and many more examples of how different italy is judged...
- the famous goal in the 1966 finals at wimbledon (no italian involved)
- maradona's hand goal (no italian involved)
- voeller spitting at rijkard at EURO 1988 ( no italian involved)
did these three examples lead to a fuzz?!?
don't foget guys: we're all on the same planet!
peace, f.

*stands up and claps* damn..I couldn't say it better myself!
HAVING PLAYED SPORTS MYSELF...YOU HEAR ALL OF THAT CRAP...AND THE BIGGER MAN WALKS AWAY...THE REAL SLAP IN THE FACE IS THE ONE WITH THE CUP IN HIS HANDS AT THE END OF THE GAME...
Also it is to be reminded that Muslim is NOT a race anymore than Judaism is..
Race is a complexion of skin...it has nothing to do with your religion...that may be religious discrimination, but it is not racism..
but all that said...that is not the error of the person asking the question..it is the error of those commenting on the questions..
this is one of the best questions that I have seen...

All I say is Mazzeri deserved it and Zidane doesn't have to apologize for sh--!
