Is this generally looked down upon?

It's fine to prefer it. Generally I feel it is looked down upon. But with all the recent news about the diamond business I think more people with look towards cubic zirconium as an alternative.
People give diamonds because they are considered precious.

no, not at all...you can purchase some really good and high quality cubic zirconium stones (actually, have you ever watched "modern girls guide to life [faking it episode]? they went to a store that sells high quality cubic zirconium and they looked great! go to style.com and it will probably repeat on style network).
anyway....
there is nothing wrong with liking cubic zirconium - plus, the price is a lot easier to handle than the high cost of diamonds. and you get the same look by wearing cubic zirconium instead of diamonds and i bet a lot more people than you think wear cz instead of diamonds...and hey you could buy like 5 cz pieces for the price of one diamond piece...sounds pretty good to me.

I'm cheap. I dont any rocks in my rings period. I dont see what the problem is cubic zirconium looks alot like a diamond. Some people just want to pay the extra expense i guess. Such a boring stone....

Yes. A lot of people don't like the way diamonds are mined. Some people use children to do the mining. Check out Kanye West's video for "Diamond's are Forever".

Everyone knows a CZ is not a "real" diamond, but if the man wants to propose and that's all he can afford , I think that's sweet. If you plan to wear this ring "til death do you part" and not buying as an investment, then God bless and congrats!
