I have two rows of sunflowers planted. The first row is about two feet tall with leaves larger than my hand. The second row, which was planted about two weeks later, is about six inches tall.
My problem is that there is a TON of grass (at least I think it's grass. The blades are wide but not thick) growing in the flower bed. It's way too much to pull by hand, so I'm wondering if there's any kind of spray I can use-- or even better, make at home-- that will kill the weeds but not the sunflowers.
Thanks!! :)

Chemical sprays will kill your sunflowers also. The poisons don't discriminate!

If you don't want to pull out the grass, try covering it up instead! Add a layer of compost to the areas around the sunflowers, and then mulch. Without sunlight, the grass will die. It will make your garden look nice also.

You can get some fabric like material called Weed Blocker. It is black, flexible, easy to cut wuth scissors, and porus enough to allow water to penetrat e. Light does not penetrate as it is black, so whatever you cover will die from lack of light. Just cut it to fit between the rows and around the base on the sunflowers. If you are careful when removing it at the of the season it can be reused. Ideally, you would put this down before planting and plant flowers through it. Good luck.

You have to remember that sunflowers are essentially weeds too and weeds are gods answer to crappy soil. Where sunflowers grow, weeds thrive. You can try Round Up but it sounds like theres too much grass to not get it on your sunflowers. I would go get a Garden Claw if I was you. I have one and it takes a lot of work out of weeding. It breaks everything up so the weeds come up easily without having to hoe and dig. Its still a little strenuous, but not as bad as being bent over hoeing.

If you use round-up (which is what you would use to kill grass) it will also kill the sunflowers , I think you may just have to pull by hand.

There are some fantastic new hoes on the market that would dispense with the grass without all of the effort. Avoid the chemicals if you can.
