bad boys are more aggressive which triggers an instinctual attraction in women that has been deep rooted for a long time. If a woman is choosing a mate, more so in the past, it is important to choose a man who will pass on aggressive traits to her offspring, since they will also be the representation of her genetic line.
Even though in today's world it is not necessary to be aggressive or have brute strength to be successful, these qualities are still ingrained as attractive in a females instincts. Another example is the number of women who demand a tall partner even though they can't explain why.
