I'm fighting a bad cold that has left me with a horrid cough at night and I can't sleep. I've tried cough syrups and lozenges. Any other ideas?

A narcotic like Vicodin, percocette, even codine will help your cough.. I would only recomend using these with a doctors perscription. There is a good perscribed cough medicine called Tussinex.. If you want to go the poor mans route try a few shots of whisky.. Alcohol is the main ingrediant in any over the counter cough syrup you are going to take.. Now remember the narcotic surpresses the cough and does not let the cough preform its function which is to displace chest congestion and yes, keep you up all nighr, anyway becareful taking narcotic meds, it is not good to use them for more than 4-5 days..

This is what my doctor told me to do, as a trial.
Take -Claritin or other allergy medcine.
I have the same problem everytime i get a cold. And nothing has worked so far, not even percription cough meds or that nasty Buckly's.

Doctor says it could be a type of allergy that starts up everytime you have a cold.
Or a mild form of ashthma, that starts up when you have a cold.

- I found it hard to believe any of those answers, didn't take the drug and delt with my cough with a humitifier at night. However, I might give it a try the next time that killer cough comes back.
Good Luck,

Apparently you should try rubbing a bit of lavendar oil on your pillow to get a good nights sleep. In australia, if you live there, theres a company thats released this plug-in aroma thing that releases lavendar scent around your room to give it that pleasant sleep

I just had a bad cold and coughs tend to stay with me for weeks. I sucked on halls and used a lot of chloroseptic and took plenty of day/nyquil. I don't know that there's much else for it, unfortunately.

You're going to have a bunch of quacks telling you natural cures though, they don't work, just for future reference.

My parents used to give us honey, tea and whiskey, then wrap us up in a blanket and we would be better by morning. I use it when nothing else works because I don't drink alcohol.

steam in the bathroom. stay in there as long as you can and sleep with a humidifier. oh yeah, you can buy mucinex at wal-mart. it helps thin out mucus in your chest so you can get it out easier.
