If the volume of a radio, or any other audible device is loud, or even a cell phone in your ear is a distraction from the concentration of what you are supposedly doing. Driving safely.
So.If a woman goes shopping and enters a car park. she suddenly realises that she is driving a car and that she needs to find the best parking space. and beat the old bugger the old bugger that looks as though he has his eye on it. So she does not want to be distracted by loud music. cell phone, or anything else. If you happen to be sat next to her. Please. Promise not to speak. For it is the only time that many people actually really realise that they are driving. As George would say. A. W.O.M.D

Ive always wondered that. I think its a distraction, as the other person said, it helps to concentrate. Maybe because their friend is shouting "im in here, over here" old school style, maybe they have no cell phone and are lost, not sure where to park, so their friend yells to them? Hahahah just playing. I know its so silly that people do that, but even myself i am guilty.

You gotta turn up the volume when the engine is revving up, but when you slow down to look for a spot the engine quiets down and the radio seems too loud.

I do it sometimes just so I'm not rude to the people walking around the parking lot- but I usually only turn it down when I go to the mall, not anywhere like Wal-mart, etc. But that's just my personal reason

I turn down the music when I am going to park so that when I get back in my car and turn it on, the music doesn't blast my ears.

Loud noises can be distracting when you are suddenly trying to concentrate a lot more than you previously were. It is a (potentially useless) attempt to improve one's focus, programmed in at a very low level in our brains.

Heightening one sense makes the other more keen. When the volume goes down, your hearing is improved and your brain has more access to the motor neurons.

I think it's so when they get back in the car or truck etc.. the radio doesn't scare the crap out of them when they start up the car.
