Which direction do you want them to sink?

As an experiement, take an empty bottle and lay it in a sink or bathtub. Watch as water fills and pools. Sometimes the bottle will right itself and the opening goes up above the water line. That is the standard configuration of a boat, it still displaces more water than the weight of the vessel, even partially loaded. Pour water in or lower the opening until that equilibrium changes. The bottle will still not usually sink straight down. The heavy end sinks first--in a ship, it is the area which filled with water first or has such weights as cargo or engines. The big end of the bottle may sink last if there is still air inside. When a ship tilts on end, one side may have more air (lower density substances life fuel, perhaps) so that lighter or comparatively less-dense end will sink last. Like sinking bottles, sinking ships are not sinking for identicle reasons. Some of the basic mechanics, however, will prevail.

Gravity causes the ship to sink. Everything is pulled towards the cente rof the earth by gravity. Which ever end fills first will go down first.

If they're sinking there's damage to a part of the hull. The water would fill up that area first, making it heavier. That part of the ship would sink first.

Gravity and buoyancy. Gravity makes them sink down, the air trapped inside creates buoyancy and makes the part not damaged (still holding air) go up.
