Before he died, Darwin himself said that his theory was not supported by the fossil record.
His theory seems to make a lot of logical sense, but there are problems with it too. There are animals such as the crocodile that have not changed in thousands of years. There is still to this day absolutely no credible proof that any lesser mankind ever existed on earth (Yes, they have claimed the jaw bone of an ape to be from a man, but it's still from an ape.) . If we evolved from apes because they couldn't survive, then why do we still have apes?
The jury is still out because the theory of evolution sounds right to a lot of people and because there are many who incorrectly think that it proves wrong some religious belief that they are desperate to prove wrong. When I was in high school, I was also taught that glass is a liquid. In fact the reason glass is thicker in the bottom of old windows is because they couldn't make it very well and it broke less often when they put the thicker part in the bottom of the window. It was a forgotten standard to install the glass that way.

People wonder why we are losing ground scientifically in respect to the rest of the world. When we are still debating evolution we kind of lose credibility in the scientific world.
Just about every religion has a creation myth. Some native americans thought the world got it's start on the back of a giant turtle. These myths filled the gaps until we could start really explaining the universe. Religious fundementalists got antsy when scientists started questioning the scientific authority of the bible. Galileo was put under house arrest for proving that the sun did not go around the earth.
Today this struggle continues. There are many Christian fundementalists who hold seats of power in this country and who want to uphold the creation myth from the bible above science (the only reliable method of expanding knowledge). This would be cool as long as it was Sunday school, but they are now invading the biology lab.
In short, the only jury that's still out thinks of the earth as flat with the sun going round and round.

I was on the jury and I'm elated to say that Darwin was found credible & distinguished, and he was hoisted onto our shoulders and carried outside the courtroom to a crowd of cheering fans around the secular world. Ahh, what a sight it was, I tell you.

No. There is evolution but some religious nuts still try to say that there is no evolution. I guess they think God isn't capable of that long of a plan.... ?

Nope. The verdict is that God improved on his earlier creations and created man. The other creatures were just early models that needed to be revamped.

as long as you have closed minded religious people and closed minded athiests who both fail to realize they are both right, and both wrong, then the jury will still be out.

Evolution AND God. I don't really see the contradiction in that.
