fish? Be real!! A 3yr old kid is going to want to touch whatever pet it is you're getting, so fish and lizards are pretty well out. Hamsters and other rodents? Not bad, but 3 is too young. A 3yr olds fine motor skills are not developed enough to play gently with the Lil pet and when it accidentally hurts it, the pet may bite, souring the kid on pets for a while. Cats are a bit unpredictable as well, I'd wait until 5 or 6 for that, but I am definitely sold on a dog. Don't get a really young puppy, get one that's about two, that's when they start calming down a bit. A great breed for children are Golden Retrievers. I adopted one when my son was two so the dog and my boy grew up together. My son could hold on the the dogs tail and sit on her and tweak her ear when he thought I wasn't looking and the dog never as much as growled at him. In the mornings Ginger would lay by the coffee table so my son could sit on her back and eat his cereal and watch Sesame Street and she'd wait until he was done, never even trying to sneak a taste. She was an awesome dog. Dogs are robust enough to withstand minor incidents of rough handling.
I'd go with a dog, just be careful what breed you get. Ask anyone, Goldens are perfect for kids. Good luck!

I always grew up with a dog, my children are now 5 and 3 and I have had my dog for 6 years. It is such a great experience for the children to grow up with a dog. But if you are against it a cat, or a fish. Animals in cages require alot more care I find and would be alot of work for a little child.

That depends, do you want a pet that she can snuggle or just an easy pet to take care of?
if the question is the later, get her some fish. They have these cute 2.5 gallon aquariums at wal-mart and pet stores. They sometimes have little themes in them like sponge bob. You can put a couple of cute fish in there and let her learn the responsibility of feeding her pet to begin with. And if by some chance something happens to the fish, it is not as tragic as something happening to another animal (i.e. a dog or cat) you can just replace them with other ones.

No animal the 3 yr old can touch or grab as it will hurt the animal without knowing it.
Best to wait or just get a dog now. Dogs are smart enough around kids to realize they are a baby. Many dogs are very protective of babies as well

I think a fish is always a good pet. If you go with other aquarium animals she will touch them and risk samonella (with reptiles) and such. Gerbils and rodents are a little harder to take care of but if you're willing they might be okay. My three year old niece ADORED her fish BOB (and didn't ever know that he was actually BOB the third...another bonus if you don't want to deal with deat issues. Hope that helps!

Truly the usual goldfish. It might be a boring pet for you but for the three year old it's all he'll need to keep him entertained. Make sure though that the three year old doesn't try eating it by putting it up in a high place but where he can still see it.

I agree that you need something caged or in a tank. A goldfish would be best, in my opinion. Hamsters are too easily killed...if she decides she wants to hold it and accidentally squishes it...that would be bad. Get her a "Nemo"! lol those fish are saltwater fish, though, so that would be more difficult to take care of than a freshwater fish. Whatever you choose, make sure to let her help you feed it/clean its cage/give it attention.

You would defiantly want something low maintenance, but not to advanced so that she can still help out with it. A goldfish or other fish would defiantly be a good option. They are easily replaceable and if it does keel over, she will never know.

A Guinea Pig would be a good pet the don't bit or scratch as bad as a rabbit would.
