Hello. I recently started playing DT/NT/G/T at the h.s. level and I am very very weak for my size (5'9" 222 lbs.) Can anyone help me get stronger? Please be specific and don't suggest roids. Thanks in advance.

If you're playing HS ball your coach should be instructing you. Doesn't your school have a weight training program?

Absolutely lift weights, but from personal experience, I would only do one section of the body a day, once a week until exhaustion. It pushes your muscles to the max and gives you plenty of time to recouperate the newly torn muscle fibers. I usually do Arms, Shoulders, Back, Chest, and then Legs. And don't forget to rest between sets, depending on the type of sets. Basically, The more weight and fewer reps you do, the more rest you need. (Your muscles need to HEAL to grow.)

Also, eating specific food helps, but it isn't totally necessary to be successful. Your body will use what you give it as long as what you give it is good. My hubby does say that peanut butter and bana sandwiches helped him- I guess cuz of the protein, fructose, and carbs.

One more thing- you might want two days for legs for your situation, as you will be using them quite a bit.

And don't be afraid to push yourself. I was until I was about twenty, then I found out that yeah, it hurts when you go hard, but that's how muscles grow (Duh!!! I said to myself).
There will be a difference between a good pain (when muscles are going to grow), like an ache or burning sensation, not too sharp- and a bad pain, which is sharp or extreme. Bad pains might mean you have torn something.
Listen to your body!!!! There will be a difference between when you need to stop and when you want to stop. Need to stop is when you put yourself in danger- you are going to faint, you are having extreme pain. Wanting to stop is when you fell tired but if you hold on one second longer, you find you can do it. Do that a few times and you get your second wind (really!!) That's when "mind over matter" comes in. I always tell myself at that point that my competitor has gotten this far, so I ain't quittin before they do, and I keep going.

Anyway, I'll stop blabbin and hope this helps.

My goodness you're a big kid.

First step...work on cardio vascular, low impact aerobics.
- no I'm not suggesting you lose weight...but for the rigors of football, you want a sound heart.

Second step - truly weights...but make sure you get your heart rate over 100 beats per minute for at least 3 minutes before you start.

Stay well hydrated...get plenty of rest.

If you want a weight program to start with - write me.

Good, stay away from the roids.

Eat lots of good protein, low fat. Work out lots, high weight, low reps. Make sure you get plenty of rest for each muscle group.

Check out some body building books at the local library, or book store. Does your school have trainer, or strength coach? You might find a personal trainer at a local gym.

I have the best bench press routine ever made. I got it from a power lifter at the YMCA. Shoot me an email and I will send it to you. It's a Microsoft Word document, so if you don't have that program, it won't open for you.
