Try a good email program like Eudora instead of the freebies. Turn on spam filtering if it is spam that is bothering you. You can also block out specific persons if you wish. But if your sons are typical, and want to receive something from someone, he or they whichever it is, may be able to figure out a way around whatever you do. But I would guess you are simply talking about spam. Unsolicited ads and all of that. Just get the full version of Eudora and it will REALLY help you out.

EMAIL FILTER
Use email filter to move email from friends to Inbox. Use the last filter to move All Email to Trash. Effect: only those in the friends-list will be received in Inbox. All other email not on friends-list will be moved to Trash.

SPAM/BULK SETTINGS
Set everything to Spam/Junk. Create a white-list of friends email only.

Note: if you do this, there is an maintenance overhead. Someone has to review and update the friends list.

If he is under 13 years of age, what are you doing giving him an 'account'?

Most ISPs, like Yahoo, are in compliance with the 'SAFE CHILD ACT' and require a member to be over 13, or have the parent's consent!

If he is older than 13, isn't it time that he was trusted to make good decisions? IF not, how will he ever learn how to? If not, WHEN will he have the opportunity to learn?

If you specified what email you were using, that would have been helpful.

But yes, you can use a whitelist if your email supports it.
