i have two tats. the first one was small and didnt have much detail or color so it wasnt so bad. the other one is called a shoulder cap and covers the entire shoulder. it also is in color and has a lot of detail. it took four hours and by then i was in a lot of pain. like cutting the same place over and over. it actually hurt worse later on, like a really bad sunburn, but after a few days it was gone. fleshy or fatty areas like the arm , thigh, belly, wouldnt be so bad. where the skin is close to the bone is worse. the reason is the needle goes through a couple layers of skin and that puts it very close to the bone where the nerves are close to the surface. its rough, but if your pain threshold is high, you should be ok. choose your tat wisely and make sure your artist uses sterilzed instruments and seperate cups for the ink. this lessons the chance for infection a lot. keep it clean, but dont scrub it even if it itches and keep it moist with a good non-fragrance cream. good luck.

Tattoos are very painful depending upon which area of your body you choose to have one applied.
I have three. The largest is aprox. 6 square inches.
After the tattoo is applied with a "gun" using 10 or more "needles", the area is very red and forms a scab over the new tattoo...your body sees it as a wound to be healed.
Think hard and long before you decide to have a permanent pattern tattooed on your body..
I equate the pain level to a chemical burn having spent decades around hazardous materials and sharp tools. I have sustained numerous injuries to my skin over the last 50 years,.. the tattoos I have are bigger than any scar I have and remind me of poor decisions I made when I was younger.

Not to bad, while they're putting it on, but after words it HUUURRTSS!!!! Think about what your getting on you. The ink they use now, colored ink, cannot be removed. I've had mine removed, it was done over ten years ago. Healthy skin, is always in When you have a tattoo, you get judged, and it can ruin your chances with someone you like or your career I was able to cover up mine, i know i would not have gotten some of jobs i did, had they known hope this helps

Everyone has different levels of pain tolerance, as you can see from the other answers. Some say it hurts like hell, while others say it's not so bad. It also depends on where you get your tattoo and the size of the tattoo. My husband got a medium sized tattoo on his arm and he said it felt like a pinching sensation in the beginning. The endorphins in your body start to kick in and then it doesn't hurt as much. A friend of mine got one on her back right below her neck and she said it didn't really hurt her at all.

If you have lived through childbirth you can handle a tatoo. I do not think that mine hurt at all. In the beginning it was kinda uncomfortable just becuase you can hear the gun going and it's loud and you don't really now what to expect. Once your adrenaline kicks in...you are good to go. Have a drink, relax, and enjoy. Don't have more than one though, cause it can be dangerous by causing your blood to become to thin...causing you to bleed more. Have fun though and just make sure you take care of it

do you like shots? a tatto is just a image injected into your skin, multiple number of times. a tattoo needle is injected to your 3rd or 4th layer of skin ( you have bout 6 layers). the needle is just pressed in repeatedly until the color starts to show. how do you think that must feel like?

I agree it's like a small burning feeling or scraping feeling. While it's healing it feels like a bad sunburn. Parts were bad (over a bone) but overall not unbearable. I've been through MUCH more pain before.

It stings beyond control. Answer to your question, yes, it does hurt. It's like a bumble bee stinging you over and over and over. You must really want one to go through with it. But trust me, you can do it if you really want it. Remember once you start don't stop or you will be stuck with a patch of ink on your skin forever. Think......Would I look sexy with this Tattoo at the age of 70????

Yes tatoos do hurt but you won't die from the pain. It also depends on what part of the body. Mine felt like little pins sticking in and out really fast. I have a pink rose on my ankle.

Yes. Like being stabbed 400 times simultaneously with a cleaver, covered in boiling acid.
