I think people are more hoping that Materazzi did not say those things as then there is another issue altogether...how far should trash talk go and what is acceptable. People will really have to search their own conscience if it is proven true or in fact it was said and I don't think they want to. Zidane should not have done that but he holds that there was extreme provocation of a very personal and cruel nature and he has not been proven wrong on that either. People keep saying that there is no proof he said those things but there is also none that he didn't. People are very quick to say they are stronger and could walk away, but that is just what they would like to think their reaction would be, but until in this position, how do any of us know how we would act. Zidane has been punished with a red card and will face further discipline. Materazzi should face discipline also and be dealt with as even though people say it is not racist, verbal abuse is still abuse when it crosses the trash talking line and becomes personal and unethical. No place in sport for either discrepancies.

Since Sunday evening the whole World has been debating what Italian defender Marco Materazzi said to Zinedine Zidane to make the retiring Frenchman react in the way he did. The French captain, in his last ever professional game, thrust his head into Materazzi's chest in Sunday's World Cup Final resulting in a red card and shame for Zidane. Today, with the help of Italian lip-reader Arturo Belladini, we can reveal what drove Zidane to self destruct;
Materazzi was seen to hold Zidane's shirt on the edge of the penalty box in extra-time at which point Zidane said
"if you want my shirt so bad you can have it"
Materazzi responded
"I dont want your shirt you mother f*@#*@*. you're a f*@#*@* old man"
As they jog away Zidane is seen to laugh at this and it is unclear how he responded due to him having his back to the TV camera
Materazzi then hit a volley of abuse
"you should've quit 2 years ago, you're a f*@#*@* has-been"
"mother f*@#*@*! your mum is a f*@#*@* muslim terrorist and you are to, f#@# you old man f#@# you"
"old man, this arena is not for you anymore mother f*@#*@*"
Zidane carries on jogging away
"you are only good enough for Tottenham now"
It's at this very point Zidane turned and head-butted him.

I think that's all the answer we need and we might get: Materazzi wasn't dishing out compliments and it wasn't forgivable for a captain that came out of retirement to give France a chance.
And it definately is a sign for those who repeat the sticks and stones mantra to grow up. We are not in kindergarten or elementary anymore where the worst thing you could say was booger-face. I doubt Materazzi stopped at boogerface.

Actually...Materazzi said that he wishes a slow and painful death to his family...and that morning Zidane had found out his mother was ill(this is from an Italian lip reader...not 100% sure)

Who cares what the Itai said to the Frog?? Does not give the Frog or ANYONE the right to use physical violence.
Sticks and stones my break my bones, but words will never hurt me.....
Old school, but is so true. He should have been a man and at least fully apologized for his actions, even if he feels he was provoked.

Who cares. Sticks and stones. That frog lost his temper and cost his team and country the world cup. Not that I care because soccer is NOT a sport.
The french homo fell for one of the oldest tricks in the book, but the french were never very good at winning bike races, soccer games or wars.

Anyone who touches someone's nipple needs to be slam on the floor bull dog style. Why was Materazzi rubbing on ZiZou's nipples? I was like why is he touching ZiZou like that. He was literally sexually molesting ZiZou on national television.
