We planted seed about 3 weeks ago and the grass is starting to come up but it seems like my lawn is getting infested with weeds. We killed the weeds before we planted our grass seed but now there are like 9749327947329 more weeds. It's ridiculous and my lawn looks like crap. I need help. We live in Minnesota and have an underground sprinkler system.

You are going to have to live with the weeds for a while. Once you have mowed the grass 2-3 times you should be able to apply a broadleaf selective weed control. (Don't use Round-up, the first guy is a moron) Mowing the lawn allows to grass plant to form a cuticle which will allow it to resist selective herbicides. You probably have lots of crabgrass coming up as well. Don't worry about it at this point. It is an annual grass and will have to come up from seed next year. You will be able to control it with pre-emergent next year. Keep up with the watering and continue over-seeding any thin areas. Use a mixture of perennial rye with bluegrass (for sunny areas). Watering is crucial!!!! The seedbed needs to remain constantly moist to allow for proper germination. You will need to do some serious over-seeding this fall Sep 1st-15th. By this point the weeds shouldn't be growing as aggressively and with the warm days and cool nights the grass should flourish. I would recommend using liquid herbicide products as opposed to some of the granular weed and feed stuff that is out there. You'll get beter results. Keep up with the fertilizer too. Don't bother with starter fert (10-10-10). Once you have mowed a few times the grass can withstand a full rate fertilizer. Put down something that will give you 3/4 to 1 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 square feet with a little phosphorus and potassium for root development. Don't let anyone talk you into sodding the lawn. Sod comes with its own share of problems and a seeded lawn looks better. Good luck!!!

First, the summer is a tough time to germinate grass seed, it is a cool season plant. You can try rye grass but it is better at the end of August. Second, weeds are usually a sign of compacted soil, so try to prepare a bed like for a garden when you do seed. Third, a broadleaf weed killer (always read the label) will kill dandelions, plantains, etc. without killing grasses (narrowleaf weeds will not be affected, however) Roundup is a Total vegetation control herbicide and will kill all plants, including your lawn. If you don't want to use chemicals, you can try high percentage acetic acid (vinegar on steroids) Hand weeding works, but is very labor intensive.
good luck

first, DO NOT USE ROUNDUP, it will kill everything including your grass.

I would suggest you put up with the weeds until the newly seeded grass is growing heartily. Then apply a weed and feed fertilizer like Scotts. It will take a while for the weeds to die out. You may have to come back in a few weeks with a broadleaf weed herbicide to spot kill those weeds missed on the weed and feed application.

Do not use round-up it kill everything! Killex sounds like it killseverything but it only kills broadleaf weeds but don't spray it yet wait until the grass has come in more as it is too weak right now to survive a spraying of anything.

But it may be wiser just to start over and buy some (weed free) sod

If you have that many weeds, might as well invest on getting another bed of grass because there's no way of getting rid of the weeds without killing the grass. This time, make sure you use a more potent weed killer. Good luck!

Make it long-term project. Pull them or dig them up and throw them into a pile to make compost with them.
