My goal is to go to Europe someday, but I would rather wait till I had more money to spend on a nice vacation. But, I am afraid that if I don't go now, then I might never make it to Europe because later in life I will have other priorities (family, career, house, limited vacation time, etc).

Staying in nice hotels IS nice - but in reality you only really sleep there. I've gone both routes. On my very first trip to Europe I stayed in hostels. I had a blast. Hostels aren't YUCKY. There are some very nice ones in fabulous locations. You can even get a private room if you want to pay a little more. Check out these web sites for hostels:

Rick Steves also has a graffitti wall where travellers tell you about their favorite and worst hostel experiences: http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/graffiti29.html

Now, I recommend going NOW. You are correct. Once you get married, have a serious job or have kids - the opportunities are limited. Go now. Stay in hostels and stay as long as your budget allows.

Some hostels that I personally recommend:
Balmers Hostel in Interlaken
Snuggles Inn in Brugge
Castello Vuillermin in Finale Ligure
Bacharach Castle on the Rhine River in Germany
A ship in Stockholm called STF/HI Youth Hostel af Chapman & Skeppsholmen

For budgeting tips and an idea on how much $$$ you will need for your trip check out http://www.backpackeurope.com/

I hope this is helpful and encourages you to go ASAP. It was the best experience of my life. In fact, I have returned to Europe at least 12 times since I backpacked and stayed in hostels. You will LOVE it.

Happy Travels!

I would say go to Europe now, but don't stay in icky hostels. My wife and I went to France and stayed in less expensive, out-of-the-way hotels that weren't all that expensive. We feel we got a better, more authentic feel for France than we would have by staying in the over-priced tourist traps.

when you go to europe, you go to see new things, you only need to sleep in hostels and they arent that bad. you won't even spend time there, you'll be out all the time, so go now! I'm in europe now and I love it!

go! Stay at hostels or at convents or monestaries or even some smaller hotels can be prety decent. Don't wait if you can get a good plane deal.

Go now, who knows if you will ever have that kind of money to say: "now I'll go to Europe", maybe you will always long for more...
