A lot of it is standard human nature. Though from my own experiences, I have encountered members of the so-called "Baby boom" generation taking credit for everything. Of course all Babyboomers aren't like this, but those who most adamantly identify themselves in this manner seem to think that they're the only people in this world who have invented anything, and deserve some kind of special treatment for this. Again, this is not ALL babyboomers, but a number of them in my immidate area have done so consistently.

I use them as a general example, because they ARE the older generation now, and I suspect that a lot of the disrespect that older people are experiencing from younger people is a reaction to younger people feeling slighted by the sometimes misinformed opinions of their elders.

To be sure, many young people need to learn a thing or two about respect. But this is also a two way street. Many younger people deal with things that older people have no clue about, and though parental guidance and things like that are ultimately good, parents guiding their children should be more overtly aware that their children ARE living and thinking human beings with thier own worldviews and opinions. To disrespect these, simply because a person is younger, or even "just a kid" does nothing more than invite behavioral retaliation, and I think that's where the more deep-seated problems in this society lie. Older people tend to dismiss newer things--they overtly call newer forms of music "strange" or "shallow" and to be sure, there is quite a lot of shallow and strange music out there...but I think that the natural aging process (and the real experience of going through things) gives people an artificial sense of superiority. It's not older people disrespecting younger people, or vice versa, it's a real-world version of the "big kids" on the playground establishing their dominace over the "little kids."

I'm older, between 40 and 60, and I don't.... if that's any consolation. I believe we have a lot of explaining to do to the many generations since "gen X"... American education has been complacent and ill-prepared in the pedagogical practices from that time to present. I'd like to ask you a question and you can choose to answer via email or IM... whatever. Do you remember daily & active dialogue in all your classes in high school? Or, were you pretty much given work packets after the lectures with little direct feedback or "Q. & A." from the instructors? Were you given the chance to present papers/ essays before the class or did you just hand them in without the rest of the class getting a chance to give you peer feedback? - No, if someone from the older generations denounce your age group, it is either from idiosy, fear, ignorance, or, most likely, GUILT! And I'm sorry for this as we should have been better than we were for you. I would invite to visit my blog at blogspot.com: http://www.collectiveintellect.blogspot.com

I think it is because young people now a days don't learn by doing actual activities.
Instead, they are learning from television and the Internet.
This is all fine and dandy but not as valuable as having actually done something before.

Also because parental guidance is becoming extinct here is the USA. The cost of living now means both Mom & Dad must work to make ends meet which leaves "DAYCARE" or sitters raising the youth of today. I don't feel that is as good as in the old days when one of the parents was able to stay home with the kids. I also feel crime, and kids behavior in general today reflects this.
LACK OF RESPECT for elders. It is a shame.

Mark my words... America is going to run into trouble down the road if things in the average house do not change. Kids need PARENTAL guidance like we had!!!

Because the older generations have learned from their mistakes and as in generations past believe they can help the new generation get on without making mistakes. The mistakes that are made don't change much from generation to generation but sometimes the consequences change rather signficantly. For example" 1983 introduced up to aids which significantly altered what was becoming a "sexual revolution" that another generation disapproved. Now we have even more consequences to deal with. Unfortunately wisdom is gained by mistakes and the young will continue to make them to develop their own wisdom.

nicely, at first, you're incorrect to say that older generations have destroyed the ambience. at first, until eventually the previous due 80's and early ninety's, we weren't thoroughly certain of what result pollution ought to have on the ambience. convinced, we knew it became undesirable, yet we did not recognize in simple terms how undesirable. It became no longer self serving consumerism that ruined something... it became self serving vast organisation who skipped over warnings and who felt that the ambience became theirs for the taking that ruined it. i count on international warming and that i have considered lately the position homes are sinking by the ice because climate is too warmth to keep ice frozen because it ought to. i'm previous sufficient to ascertain what has replaced through the years, and as man or woman who has believed that we favor to be careful and safeguard, I surely were laughed at because i believe that different generations, and great corporations have had a foul result on the air we breath. ought to the more youthful technology hate the older technology? for sure no longer, yet they ought to well known what has surpassed off and they ought to paintings to advance it... as lots of the older generations are literally doing.

Tunnel vision, lack of vision or perception, different sense of humor if they have any. When some people get older either they get more rigid and set in their ways or they get to be more of what they already are or both. Think about it. When you are young, a lot of people are already criticizing each other and forming cliques. They have little patience. I think you get patience after having your own kids. Thanks for voting for my answer on the other question.

Do we degrade people who aren't born yet?
