Absolutely no comparison.
Harry Potter is a good childrens story. Children and those with limited intelligence will choose Harry Potter over LOTR.
Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece of fantasy. It has helped to create a whole genre of science fiction and fantasy tales, games and much more since it was published. Lord of the Rings is the classic Fantasy setting and tale of good vs evil. The storyline of the books LOTR and Hobbit are MUCH more interwoven than most any other story... ever. LOTR is the best book set ever written, LOTR movie captured what it could of the book, and was wonderfully done in keeping with the over all story. LOTR movie set is my favorite of all time, period. Nothing else even comes close.
In short, HP = Children LOTR = Imaginative Adults

Lord of the Rings.
Harry Potter is a great series with some cool effects but LOTR is a classic novel that has been around for years inspiring people left right and center. Things like Dungeons and Dragons or Magic the Gathering have been able to become huge success' because of Tolken. The Hobbit is what really started the phenomenon and though the Trilogy has finally been made for a current audience there are still other versions of the series. To me Harry Potter is entertaining but still aimed at hte amusement of children and LOTR is more based on an adult audience. Historically speaking, LOTR has had and made a bigger impact on the world.

LotR. Why? I feel that HP has bad acting. The best actor is Emma Watson. The others are more like people just reciting lines. It sounds too practised. Hp doesn't have as good graphics. They are very good though, but LotR is just better. LotR has more depth. Besides (I know that this isn't the movie's fault) but HP is like a partial copy of LotR.
Whomping Willow-Ent
Dumbledore-Gandalf
Dobby-Gollum
Scar-Ring (power is in them so the evil guy wants the person)
HP is a very good movie and book but LotR is better.

I like Harry Potter better because there is more of a story, more character development, and the characters are more sympathetic in my opinion than Lord of the Rings. That said, I still feel they are both classics and deserve to be read by all.

i think people like lord of the rings bcos they think it got copied by harry potter. some people like harry potter bcos it is newer. i like harry potter because i like the types of adventures and its a lot easier to understand. many people enjoy harry potter since its newer and the author has an amazing story since she wrote the first book in a cafe'. LotR doesnt really make sense 2 everyone. hope this helps :)
i think LOTR is BETTER but i happen 2 like harry potter.

I like both the same. There is no real comparison between the two besides, OH MY GOD THEY GOT TURNED INTO MOVIES LETS ALL SCRAMBLE TO THE MOVIE THEATER TO SEE THEM AT MIDNIGHT....sorry, it just bothers me how obsessive people can be....anyway, I like them both because they both have very different stories. HP lasts longer, has a younger hero, and has someone you would probably expect as a hero (aka someone who's lost everything but seems to have everything to fight for at the same time!). LOTRs has many races, many themes, many side adventures, and a slightly unlikely hero. I hold LOTRs on a slightly higher standard though because it's what got me writing and because it can be related to all ages.

I've read both, and so far I like LOTR better.
But that's not final because I don't know the ending of HP and I think endings are very important.
What I consider a good book is one that makes you sigh with contentment after you fininsh reading it. (which reminds me that I deeply regretted reading the Coda of Stephen King's Dark Tower Series.)
And that's what i did with LOTR.
I can't say the same about HP. Yet.

LOTR without a doubt or hesitation. Superb character development and interaction. Description of environment. Story line builds with depth, meaning, consistent clarity and flow. However, why I love JRR Tolkien's masterpiece is because of the beautiful, life-teaching, allegory of good versus evil, diverse peoples coming together for a common goal and how a simple Hobbit through his own inner resolve and the strength of friends and how they believe in him can overcome the darkest of evil. Harry needs magic! Frodo just needed the power that comes from love.

YOU MEAN LORD OF THE SNOOZE-FEST, RIGHT? HARRY POTTER IS SO MUCH BETTER AND ACTUALLY ENTERTAINS WHILE I WOULD ONLY READ LORD OF THE SNOOZE-FEST IF I HAD TROUBLE SLEEPING, HEY MAYBE I SHOULD TRY THAT TONIGHT. LORD OF THE SNOOZE-FEST IS SO BORING. HARRY POTTER HAS ACTION AND ADVENTURE AND THE MAIN CHARACTER ISNT A WEIRD FREAK. AND BY THE WAY TO XCVFG YOU DONT KNOW TALENT IF IT BIT YOU IN THE BUTT, YOUR SAYING DANIEL RADCLIFFE IS A BAD ACTOR, OKAY LETS SEE YOU APPEAR IN A MOVIE IN FRONT OF THE WORLD AND DO BETTER, HE COULD KICK YOUR BUTT IN THE ACTING BUSINESS!!! DANIEL RADCLIFFE IS A GREAT ACTOR AND YOU SHOULD SHUT UP ABOUT THINGS THAT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND, DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND TO ITZ MEEEE, THERE ARE SIX HARRY POTTER BOOKS NOT FIVE GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!!!! AND TO INNERCIRCLE YOU ARE THE STUPIDEST THING TO LIVE ON THIS PLANET, HARRY POTTER IS NOT JUST FOR "CHILDREN WITH LIMITED INTELLIGENCE", LORD OF THE RINGS IS FOR GEEKY KIDS WHO CANT GET A LIFE AND ARE SO GEEKY THAT THEY THINK THAT FRODO IS REAL. GET A LIFE, LORD OF THE SNOOZE-FEST IS THE STUPIDEST BOOK ON THE PLANET, THE MOVIES ARE LONG, SO IS THE BOOK, THEY ARE HARD TO FOLLOW AND THEY ARE POINTLESS AND KEEP CONTRADICTING THEMSELVES!!!

lord of the rings. its a master peice, the way its written it almost feels as though you living it. harry potter on the other hand.....is a weird almost clumsy potrayal of an abnormal boys(even in the wizard world) teenage years. seeing as how the series is written by a woman, i often find harry to express far more female emotions than male ones, it makes him seem....like a wimp.
