I have a family member that was very ill but likes to drink, alot. He went to the hospital, and when he left the hospital that day, he said he had to go for a simple blood test. No problem, I can handle that. He went for the test today and I believe he lied to me. He apparently got the results back in less than 1.5 hours. He also said that his iron content was so high that he would have died in 2 days. He said the doctors said it was the content of iron in the beer cans? This does not seem right at all. Does anyone know of any sites that discuss HIGH iron contents in people? I know he is just an alcoholic and his kidneys are failing. Kidney problems are my bane, I know the symptoms. Website suggestions, please, so I can get physical proof that he needs help?! Thank you!

Beer cans are made of aluminum. Take your friend to an AA meeting.

There is actually a thing as too much iron--I don't know the name of it. Go to Webmd.com and look up too much iron. I don't really beleive the beer can theory. As far as it coming back in 1.5 hours, that is reasonable---I get tested for anemia and it takes less than 15 min to get it back. It's the same test,my results being low, and his being high. He may be half right--sometimes people only hear part of what a doctor says and imagine the rest. I could tell you stories about my mother....

To answer your initial question; Yes, you can have too much iron. Look up heavy metal testing. These type of tests measure the amount of heavy metals in your body. Heavy metals are elements like zinc, copper, mercury, lead etc. Too much and too little can have an effect on you like anything else.

Even a small amount of excess iron can damage heart and brain and other storage sites in the body and lead to heart attack or stroke. Excess stored iron can lead to atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease.
