How much do you like your job?

Is it worth getting fired just to be able to diddle on the internet during the day?

But to answer your question, it sounds like the problem isn't a firewall. It sounds like the company that you work for has some kind of MAC address filtering on its network and if your MAC address isn't on the "OK to connect list", then you don't get access to the network. Just a guess.

you may even be on a network that has vlans set up by mac address, and if your mac address is not known, you're getting put on a really limited vlan. to do some diagnostics, go to a command prompt and do ipconfig/all and see if you got an ip address and router/gateway and what not. if you didn't, but you know you are connected physically to the network, then your company assigns dhcp addresses by mac address. if you got an ip address but you can't get to the internet, only to things inside the network, then they may have a proxy set up that you have to use to get out to the internet.

in either case, those other guys are right. is it worth disciplinary action just to get on the web? most companies would be pretty hot just knowing you have your own personal laptop there at work.

It may be that your laptop is set up with an IP address that is manually set. Networks at work typically are set to use DHCP to send out an IP address and other info.

So, go into "Network Connections" to look at the TCP/IP properties. Make sure they are set to "Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS automatically". Depending on what kind of software you are running on your laptop, you might need to reboot the laptop at that point.

Another possibility is that you may be using the PPoE protocol at home. At the office you will need to turn that off and use straight TCP/IP instead.

Annorax is right. You would have to be upfront about it and ask your supervisor or at least your IT department.
