Don't worry about hurting his feelings. It's always more painful for the guy to have false hopes than to be clearly and plainly rejected. Personally, I have always appreciated absolute bluntness.

Make it simple. Tell him your feelings for him are very deep...but not romantic. You do not want to loose your closeness so please understand. This way the two of you can continue to look out for each other and have each others back. Let him know that there are few men a girl can really trust and put her confidence in as he has been to you.
And...
You can strengthen your bond by giving him (honest, but not catty) inside tips on other girls that may help him find interest in someone else.

Start talking about someone else you like around him. Tell him you wish that guy would ask you out!!! If he doesn`t get the hint then just be honest with him or tell him your not ready for a relationship right now!!! That works most of the time.

i don't think there is a way, it will hurt him, but he should get over it after all the one real thing between friends is honesty, so you should be honest with him after all if you don't tell him soon it may hurt his feelings more later on
i hope it all works out and you are still good friends afterwards

either way you say it if he likes you his feelings will be hurt so just be honest in a loving tone Say ( his name) I just want to stay friends so dont ruin our friendship by crossing the line. I know you cant help it if you like me but I just want a friend relationship I love you like a friend and thats all.

tell him that you really want to be his friend and that you know that like 90% of the couples in the world brake up eventually and that you are scared that if that happens then you wont be friends anymore so therefore you just want to keep it like its is -so that nothing will be ruined

He's probably after you, not a relationship with you, so just coming out and telling him would probably help him out alot and I doubt it would hurt his feelings.
