You're kidding, right? It is THE reason the Unites States is the United States. How important do you think it is? We do not swear our alligance to a king or pope or golden demigod. We swear to protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States. It is the entire basis for our country.

Don't you think that makes it pretty valuable as a political symbol?

First you need to know what the Constitution holds for Americans. Have you read it? If not, find it in the library or online and take a look. Now, you probably can answer your question. It is a very important document, not just a symbol.
