At the 2006 French Open women averaged 2.3 sets per match; men averaged 3.6 sets per match. For the winners of the seven matches that means an average of 16.1 sets for the winning lady and 25.2 sets for the winning gentleman. Given an equal prize to each winner of approximately USD $1,000,000. this results in the lady making $62K per set and the gentleman $39K per set. It appears the ladies play less tennis and make more money. Does this seem fair and balanced to you? Your thoughts please. Thanks.

Typically, women have to hit a lot more balls per set than the men who often win off the serve, so the per set salary is not a good metric.

The real difference in pay is at the other Tier 1 events. Men only play best 2 of 3 at these tournaments, but get paid A LOT more than the women at their tier one events. Here the women are clearly underpaid relative to the men even though they tend to generate more interest and bring in more spectators.

Finally, the salary any athlete commands is proportional to their ability to bring in spectators. Wimbledon reaps huge amounts of money from the tournament and most of the buzz comes from the women's side of the draw. I support paying the women equal purses.

I don't know much about sports, but I think it depends on how you look at the situation. If you're just looking at the 2006 French Open by itself, then yeah, it does look like female professional tennis players are overpaid. However, if you look at professional tennis overall, I'm pretty sure that male and female pro players get paid pretty much the same, give or take, and if you look at sports overall, then male pro sports players definitely get paid a lot more than women pros, regardless of whether they win or lose.

Overall, the situation does seem fair and balanced to me. But then again, I don't really pay attention to sports. x]

Sandra de Jenkin (France) is probably one of the best umpires hands down. She is extremely fair and has razor sharp accuracy. Now, there's the other ump that was presiding over the Fed-Tipsaravic game, and she also umped another game, but I now forget. She had a hacking cough that sounded like that Ricola commercial. I can't believe the authorities didn't get a sub for her. There she was barking away into the microphone. I would have slung a ball at her. She wouldn't be able to fine you, because she'd be hacking away, unable to speak. And then what was up with the ump that screwed Andy Roddick, when he allowed a challenge, even though the player kept playing (you're supposed to stop the play immediately if you want to challenge a no-call). That's plain infuriating. No wonder the players swear and toss their racquets. heh.

When it comes to the Slams, YES, I think they're overpaid because they only play the best of 3 sets, as opposed to 5 for the men.
Because of that reason, a large majority of the female players are able to particpate in both womens and mixed doubles, where they can win even more money.

For the guys, it's like you have to choose a career in either singles or doubles.

This is a tricky question. I enjoy men's and women's tennis equally, although I know that the quality of the men's game is higher than that of the women.

Yes, the men play more on average, and they don't get paid as much per set as do the women. However, what matters isn't how much they play, or who is better, but rather who draw the spectators. As long as the women's game is competitive, and as long as they present enough attractive personalities, the amount of play shouldn't matter when it comes time to payday.

So, to sum up, as a tennis fan I believe the sexes should be paid equally.

No one ever is overpaid if there are people willing to pay.
Plus set averages can vary from very high like 3.6 to 2.3 so overall it comes down to how much money the public and sponsors are willing to give.
