sqrt ( x)
x^(1/2)
Sqr { Sqr means square root}

a common abbreviation is sqrt.
So "the square root of 2" would be sqrt(2).
There are also key codes for the computer that will produce the square root symbol (√). I use a mac, so I don't know the PC code, but the mac code is simply "alt-v."
