Good question, and difficult to answer.
They are worth studying, because we must find out what causes people to become such remorseless killers. As for telling the truth, once the game is up, they often brag about what they've done.
Modern brain research is finding out some disturbing things about these people. Developmental psychologists now claim that children who lack empathy (which is a very desirable human trait) can be spotted as early as the age of 2. It's worth noting here that the Roman Emperor Caligula murdered both his parents when he was only 4. He didn't organize a conspiracy of adults to act for him; he climbed into their private chamber through a very small window and stabbed them to death with a sword.
PET scans (Positron Emission Tomography) show that sociopaths lack critical brain functioning, the functioning that recognizes suffering in others. Mice - mice! - are capable of empathy - sociopaths are not.
Executing them all is certainly one option. But they constitute 3% of the male population and 1% of the female population (not all serial killers, true, but welfare cheats, criminals, thieves, etc.) . We have about 290 million people in the country. .04 x 290 m = 11,600,000 sociopaths. (!) We're going to have to start sterilizing the parents of these people as well. Where will it end? The future is bleak.

Humans should not be punishing other humans. ''Punishment'' means - you have been bad, and this is an atonement for your wrongdoing. Mortals do not know exactly what is going on in a person mind when they are doing something , nor can they know what should be an apt punishment for that wrongdoing. Having said that, it is highly likely that when punishing someone, one can take action against that person that is not justified. Taking an unjust action against another human is wrong under almost every set of moral rules. Therefore society is never allowed to ''punish'' for a breaking of a rule within a society.
The only thing society is allowed to do, is to take the minimum amount of action that will be enough to be confident that there will not be another breach of rules.
If this is true, the death penalty is out of the question. There has never been any proof that the death penalty lessens the murder rate in the place that it is enforced. If anything, studies have shown to the contrary, that it raises the murder rate. (It makes sense, because having a death penalty creates a culture of death. But that is for a different time) Putting a killer in jail for the rest of his life, with no chance of parole, insures that the killer will not kill again. That is the most moral thing to do.

Absolutely we should study them. You'd be surprised how many serial killers will be honest about what they did, how they did it, and why once when they are caught. It's because these "sociopaths" are proud of what they have done and they in a sense will brag to authorities and or reporters about what they have done.
I for one would rather spend my tax money to study a serial killer to prevent a future serial killer.

They should be sent away to a torture chamber and slowly, slowly eaten to death by rats, and then when the rats get a good bite, send them to have bleach poured in the wounds, and then
have a needle that sticks em every-time they move and then
have a volt of electricity shock them until they have had enough and cry for mercy and then put them in a hole that is filled with the most vile disgusting concoction like swamp water filled with pig guts and human waste and keep them in there until they
become like a prune then take em out and put em in the basement of a prison where they can sit and demolish the rest of their days........killing em is just to easy in my opinion

maximum serial killers have a "form" that they prefer. some kinds are youthful fantastically lady, some kinds are older women who seem as if their moms, some kinds are youthful boys. yet you listen a lot extra about the serial killers whose "kinds" are youthful fantastically, white women. Why? because they make for good press releases, that's why.

The Government of the U.S. feels we should scold serial killers or at minimum.. spank their little hannies. That is one of the many things wrong with our sick judicial system. If I was in charge... I would catch the serial killer.. give him/her one day to contest and then firing squad the second day with ALL of the victims families present (if they wanted to be) on the FRONT ROW so they could throw rotten eggs/tomatoes, etc at the killers just before their dying.

Should they be put to death? Yes. Incidentally, death row inmates cost more in taxpayer money than lifers. However, I am still pro-death penalty. Should we study them? Also, yes. There are numerous books out there where incarcerated sociopaths have been cooperative in psychoanalysis.

Eye for an eye....you kill somebody....well you should be killed...do onto others as you would have them do onto you...treat others how you'd like to be treated...
Murder is...stupid...and pleading insanity...DUH..we know you're insane, you killed somebody..that's not a defense. Killers should be killed...but only if we're positive they killed somebody...which given science these days...we can be pretty positive of who killed somebody. Oh sure it'd make the killer killers...killers as well...but obviously the person they killed can't do it...so somebody else should ensure it...I would expect the same if I killed somebody....which...Will never happen...

If they don't want to be decent members of society, I say we kick them out and drop them all off on a deserted island where there are no laws and let them kill each other.

No we shouldn't allow the State to kill anybody no matter how much they might deserve it.
Yes they are generally truthful when studied by experts. They are very proud of their crimes and enjoy boasting about them.
