Been a parrothead since 1975 when he performed at the Georgia Coliseum on the UGA campus.
Loved every minute of it.
(His opening act was a newcomer named Billy Ocean too).

This guy CREATED his own niche and became hugely successful in the music business doing it his way. He didn't need radio airplay or top-40 hits. His music was so FUN and unique that fans were attracted like iron filings to a magnet.
Rather than creating an untouchable mystique about himself, like typical rock musicians, he did just the opposite. He would come out in T-shirts and sandals at his concerts, talk with the crowd and make sure everyone had FUN.
His down-to-Earth, casual guy persona obviously comes out in his songs.
I think its safe to say that many popular musicians aren't that talented - just in the right place at the right time or the product of mass marketing - but in my book Jimmy Buffet has as much song-writing talent as anyone ever in the industry. (Other greats: Billy Joel, John Mellancamp, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Mark Knoffler)
Final Note: I like Wierd Al Yankovic for the same basic reason - he created his own niche and gives 110% to make sure his concerts are FUN.

all my friends call me the "12 Volt Man"...many of Jimmy's songs strike that chord in many of us of everyday people in everyday suroundings ("In the Shelter")...everyday people in not-so-everyday surroundings ("Desperation Samba")...our mortality ("Trip Around the Sun")...and our way of looking at life ("Floridays")...been a fan since '73 and ain't planning on quitting until I go "Beyond the End"...
