You can use Tucks Pads, Preparation H, or a generic brand. There is also the option of surgery if they get too bad.

A good remedy is ointment, sold over the counter, and applied with an inserting small tube (About 3 kinds of ointments) This will give temporary relief. Also, a cold wash cloth between your "cheeks" will be comforting as a temporary relief if you don't have the ointment, or before applying the ointment. If you use the cloth after the ointment, it will take away some of the medication. There is a new surgery now that is relatively fast, painless and easy that you might ask your Dr. about if they are external hemorrhoids. But I would definitely sit in a tub of water, soak, dry thoroughly, and then apply the ointment over the area especially if it itches. There is a wonderful prescription called Lidocaine HCL 3% which deadens the pain, itching, and burning. Lidocaine, as you know, is used by doctors to deaden pain.

Well, if you are sure it is hemmroids, then first:
1) Drink lots of fresh Melon Juice (1 liter/day) and eat Papaya.
2) Sleep early.
3) Stop eating Junk Food.
4) Avoid hot stuff.
5) Take lot of water
6) Avoid sitting for too long. (no more than 90 mins)
It will disappear in 2-3 days.

I am recovering from that surgery now and it really hurts ! ! !
I was in bed the whole week.I went this week for a check up.Everthing is fine. They did a biopsy to check for cancer.
They are know to cause colon cancer.
The recovery is very painful especially when you have a bowel movement. But I can be sure I don't have cancer ! !

try using sitz baths and any over the counter meds -- if all else fails - go to your doc and have them prescribe topicals such as calcium channel blockers -- you'll most likely want to avoid surgery because it sucks and most patients say that hemorrhoidal surgery has the most painful postop recovery compared to any other surgeries --
as for preventative stuff - try to avoid not sitting on the toilet or any other unnecessary prolonged straining
